About the Department

The Department of Economics was established in the year 2018-19 on the recommendations of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Tirupur, an industrial region and a hub of Knitwear manufactures has a huge need of candidates with knowledge in economics. As a result, students from this region throng into the courses offered by this department. The department offers Bachelor of Arts in Economics for a maximum of 30 students and Master of Arts in Economics for a maximum of 18 students. Both these courses are affiliated to Bharathiar University and offers the curriculum designed by this renown nationally accredited University.

The department functions in a well equipped spacious MGR Centenary building of this college. The department is sanctioned with 12 teachers and presently has one Associate Professor and two guest lecturers. The department also contributes to other streams of study offered by this institution through teaching ancillary courses in economics. Though at its infant stage, the department has proposed to offer special coaching for competitive examinations. Further, proposal has been sent to the Directorate of Collegiate Education of the Government of Tamil Nadu to start M.Phil. and Ph.D research programmes in Economics. A minor project and a major project under the funding of the University Grants Commission (UGC) have already been taken and completed successfully. Students Association, Parent-Teachers Association and Alumni Associations of this department have been contributing to the excellence of this department through various activities.

Courses Offered:

1.Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Economics:

Eligibility : A pass in Higher Secondary Education with accountancy and commerce
Duration of the Degree Programme : Three years with six semesters
Graduation requirements : Successful Completion and passing the core, allied and elective courses prescribed by Bharathiar University and securing the prescribed minimum CGPA

2.Master of Arts (MA) in Economics

Eligibility : Any Bachelors Degree and should have studied Economics as one subject/course
Duration of the Degree Programme : Two years with four semesters
Graduation requirements :Successful Completion and passing the core, allied and elective courses prescribed by Bharathiar University and securing the prescribed minimum CGPA
