INTRODUCTION

The Department of Commerce is one of the largest Department of Chikkanna Government Arts College, Tirupur- 641 602 with an strength of around 600, which is established in the academic year 1971-1972 and started offering under graduate programme in Commerce B.Com in the same year. The B.Com (Evening College) commenced its first batch from the academic year 1972-1973 onwards. The another under graduate course B.Com with Computer Applications commenced its first batch since 2004-2005 under self-financing scheme and later in the year 2006-2007 B.Com with Computer Application (B.Com-C.A) course initially started under self-financing programme is converted under regular aided programme on par with other regular courses. After the introduction of shift system in the colleges from the academic year 2008-2009 the B.Com (Evening College) three year under graduate course is converted into B.Com additional section (Section-B).The department of Commerce started offering Master of Commerce (M.Com) from the academic year 2012-2013 onwards. Commerce department of Chikkanna Government Arts College is a recognized research department affiliated to the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore -641 046, offering M.Phil and Ph.D programs both full time and part time mode.

Presently there are 12 teaching staff members working in the department of commerce and two teaching staff members in the capacity of Associate Professors and remaining ten teaching staff members are Assistant Professors category. All the teaching staff of commerce department is with doctorate degree qualified and are recognized research supervisors by the Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. One Associate Professor SLET qualified and Two Assistant Professors of department of commerce are SET qualified. The faculty members of commerce have attended orientation and refresher programs from time to time to up skill their domain knowledge. The faculty members of commerce of Chikkanna Government Arts College are representing Course Affiliation committee of Bharatiar University, Coimbatore and various Board of Studies bodies of the Bharatiar University, Coimbatore and several autonomous colleges across the state of Tamilnadu. Moreover, the faculty members of Commerce department are subject experts for Doctoral committees of research scholars and acted as resource persons for seminars and conferences. The faculty members of the department of commerce are participating and Presenting papers in conference and seminars of various colleges and also Publishing articles in National and International Journals. The well qualified and competent faculties of the Department are dedicated to the academic and overall development of the College by actively taking in charge of NCC, NSS, EDP,YOGA,PLACEMENT ect

The Research Department of Commerce has produced more than 70 Ph.Ds and 50 M.Phil programmes since inception. The department of commerce is having a separate computer lab functions with 30 computers with an internet connection.

The students of commerce department are actively participating in NSS, NCC, Sports and various Association activities to enrich academic and co-curricular activities. The meritorious students are honored with proficiency prizes at the college day function every year. The commerce department is regularly conducting parent teachers meeting to inform the parents regarding their ward’s academic progression. The students are given regular counseling by the respective class tutors in order to help those teaching learning difficulties. The department is conducting guest lecturers periodically from outside subject experts.
